I've had a collection of symptoms recently; I think that they're related, but it's difficult to search the whole set at once.

  • reversed down my driveway, put it into D, but was still in neutral
  • sometimes stuck in shifter position, need to press the shift lock release with my screwdriver
  • even if I do get it into park, won't start, as if it doesn't think it's in park
  • had one case of a weird surge on the highway a couple of days ago

I know that there's a brake switch that could explain the not starting, but I don't know if that's the most likely explanation, given the other issues.

What do you think? Any other checks/tests to perform to help diagnose it?

  • Don't know for sure, but seems like you might have a linkage issue, like something is worn out. I'd follow the linkage/cables (whatever attaches the shifter to the transmission) and see if you can find anything which is worn out. Many connection points, especially right at the shifter or right at the transmission may be bad and not allowing the shifter to "communicate" correctly with the transmission. – Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Jul 17 '20 at 23:55
