Aug 1, 2016 at 18:30 comment added tlhIngan Most computers are locked-down pretty good, and performance increase is not a matter of "sending commands." You can get diagnostic information and engine data by "sending commands", but performance things usually involve physically hacking the computer, and some can be done with external electronics. Generally speaking, you will not unlock massive horsepower, and the things that do tend to make your engine run rough at idle.
Aug 1, 2016 at 18:29 comment added Jason C @Alex Probably not through the diagnostics port alone unless you find some undocumented stuff. You can often purchase replacement "performance" ECUs, but be careful: 1. You may no longer pass emissions depending on what the chip does and 2. You sometimes run the risk of breaking thingsor, shortening part lifespans, or decreasing performance by pushing stock parts past their design specs. So do your research first.
Aug 1, 2016 at 18:18 comment added Alex Rodgers Is there anything I can do to the computer (sending commands)? I don't know if I would be able to get my hands on a reprogrammer.
Aug 1, 2016 at 17:16 comment added rpmerf As for the question "cheap ways to add power" a $300 NOS Sniper kit with jets for up to a 75 shot is hard to beat.
Aug 1, 2016 at 17:09 comment added JoErNanO Are we really suggesting N2O to a high schooler? :)
Aug 1, 2016 at 16:59 comment added Jason C You can pull unneeded stuff out of the vehicle too to shave a small amount of weight off, essentially a free upgrade. The cost is generally comfort and convenience, e.g. pulling out the seats, etc.
