Just a kid going through college in hopes to change the world, or at the very least get a decent career in software development.

While I'm going through school I've been working on some projects to further my learning outside of school. Right now I'm focused on a Ruby on Rails project "qRPSd" - It's an effort to provide the tools needed to play a classic tabletop RPG over the internet! (Which is pretty neat, to me, because it'll let me play some old favorites with friends that are likewise going through school.)

This site has provided me with awesome help in the past; so I hope to become an active member of StackOverflow, both as a learner and maybe a teacher :)!

comment How to prevent body damage and rust from salted roadways?
Also I currently have all season tires. I was actually underwhelmed with them in the summer months, but surprisingly they're doing OK for the snow. Any suggestions for snow tires though?

Waxing won't be a problem; but my complex [and most of my friends and family] have shut off their hoses for the winter, so that will be a bit of a pain. To be fair: taking it for a good hand wash and wax would still be cheaper than parking it in the garage.

Good tip on the aluminium wheels. I've already repaired a rim leak earlier this year, so I'll go about investing in a pair of steel wheels.

It did end up being corrosion of the aluminum rim; right where one of the balancing weights was. Took the tire off and I haven't had any problems since. Thanks for the help!

Turning over means it makes the cranking noises. (As you hold the starter, the engine is making some noise.) So if it's not turning over (just a click and then nothing) it is different than turning over and never firing on its own.

comment What problems can come from AC not running for years?
The other thing I've heard is that they are oiled by the refrigerant - so if you run them with low or no refrigerant that might cause them to break, too.

comment 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Disc Brake Conversion
In re: #4. I don't think it matters, personally. If you can do a proper conversion disc brakes are far safer (and IMHO easier to maintain. Servicing drums has been nothing but a pain on all my vehicles.)

comment New headlight lenses?
You need to buy proper lenses, too. Installing the bulbs without proper lenses is a terrible idea. Yes; the road will seem brighter - but your light's throwing distance will be wrong and the cut off will be wrong so you're going to blind oncoming traffic and your high distance visibility is actually worsened. Please take care when converting to HID and do it proper. (Hint: It costs more than $60; I never found lenses for a 97 Caravan less than $120/lens.)

choster: Lot's of [automatics] have exactly this, though. They have an over-drive gear. Usually a final drive of less than 1:1. - Pretty pathetic acceleration, which is why they also have a kickdown switch. You step on gas, it's smart enough to downshift. Not exactly what author is calling for, but same thing could be applied in principal. (A kickdown for the "fuel gear.")

comment How do the audio controls on the steering wheel communicate with the radio?
I just wanted to add: if you're going to be working at all with the clockspring (aka, trying to wire up an aftermarket radio to your in-wheel controls) please be very safe in regards to the airbag. (Disconnect the battery and follow manufacturer instructions to remove the airbag) before you try anything.

comment '97 dodge grand caravan won't start - sometimes
We definitely need more information, but I'd like to add I had an issue with my 97 caravan not starting. The distributor cap was cracked, and it would crank but not fire if there was lots of moisture in the air (humid, or the car got rained on.) Just needed a replacement.

comment Accessing the Stereo in a '96 Infiniti G20
You may have to remove the large white plastic console to access the screws that let you remove the radio from the dash. That's kind of how my deck-swap in a Caravan worked out. I can't really tell you how to do it, but I'll see if there's a guide online for your vehicle. Update: carradiorepair.com/pdfs/infiniti-g20.pdf See if that helps!

comment Just HOW urgently should I replace this tire? Is it safe to drive on at all?
sharptooth: All tires I've ever owned have those. They're actually little flimsy bits of rubber that taper off the tire. I believe their purpose is actually as a wear indicator. My current set of Goodyear's has them along the sides. They shouldn't break off (easily) if your tire is properly balanced and inflated. Otherwise they wear off, indicating a problem.

comment How to diagnose “Creaking” / “Scraping” sound when entering parking lots?
You mention leaking oil as a symptom of bad shocks, which I do happen to have a fairly minor oil leak. What about bad shocks would cause an oil leak, out of curiosity?
