@Patrick - True that this is a possible duplicate, but we'll need more info from @divided to be sure.

Have they tried changing one of the suspect tires with a "known-good" tire from another wheel?

@BobCross - I don't disagree with your point on specificity. I was just throwing the idea out for consideration. Looking forward to seeing the answers here.

@BobCross - I disagree. It's a technical engineering question with a definite, objective answer. The only problem with it might be that the answer could vary depending on how a specific car was built.

@BobCross - I understand. I just wasn't sure if a more general "how do intake silencers affect performance and airflow" without a make/model specification would equally address your particular issue.

Seems like a scenario similar to the Lincoln Mark VIII. There's a silencer near the front-passenger wheel that does nothing but restrict airflow to make the engine quieter. Supposedly, the gains from removing it are very minor aside from the slight amplification of engine noise. Could this question maybe be widened in scope a bit?

^ What they said. This question needs some serious scoping and clarification.

comment Removing oil filter from Lincoln Mark VIII
I seem to recall reading elsewhere that a hard turn will help. I'll try to come back and update the next time I have a chance to test this. The oil filter is most definitely not accessible from above, and I'm pretty sure removal of the wheel and trim offers little to no benefit in this situation for this vehicle. Thanks for the recommendations.

Thank you for the suggestions. However, only #4 is really applicable to my problem. (I'll have to find out if that's even possible, or advisable for my car.) I can generally get the filter disconnected with relatively little trouble - it's actually getting it out that's the problem.

@Jay - I was sort of wondering if that might cause some confusion, but figured the fairly clear context would resolve that.

Also, use the parking brake and wheel chocks if available. (Though you may want to skip the former, if you're working on the brakes.)

revised Why does my A/C blow foul smelling air when it first turns on?
Added note to account for older models that do not have a cabin air filter.
