comment What might cause inconsistant ignition, an extemely loud bang but no visible damage?
Thanks Mauro. I've taken the plugs out again and they are black but not wet. I'll look at adjusting the fuel/air mix. What's a good way to clean the plugs?

I've had a look at the plugs again and they are black but not wet. Seems like carbon fouling, probably over-fueling so I will try and adjust the fuel/air mix. I might also consider getting a new air filter just in case. The starter turns at normal speed and adding a bit of petrol to the carb doesn't help. I've got someone to help me today and will try and do a compression test. What's the best way to clean the plugs?

Thanks. I will recheck spark and fuel supply and perform a compression test today and post the results.

Okay thanks. Good to know it's a reasonable engine. I will investigate getting a rebuild done. :)

I ended up tracking down a couple of ball bearings. (I needed 2 of the only size I could find in a hurry) and put them in above the switch. Seems to have done the job since I couldn't find anywhere that had the actual replacement.

Thanks Rory. I have checked the transmission and cannot find any broken lever arms or anything that looks like there should have been one attached. I have been trying to find some spec's on the transmission but haven't had any luck. AFAIK it seems complete.

The old switch is in pretty bad shape.. hence the reason for replacing it in the first place. I can't get a closed circuit from it at all but I am pretty sure that's because it's dead. I'll probably go back to Mitsubishi and find out there is another version of the switch that is actually the right one and they didn't look it up correctly the first time :(

:) I'm trying to find the old switch currently to check that.

Thanks Nick, that seems to be the crux of the problem. The switch seems to be a closed circuit by default, but this is the switch sourced from Mitsubishi direct for this vehicle. It seemed strange to me that it would be a closed circuit by default. I do have a multimeter as well, it's invaluable for more than just cars :)

Someone has suggested I check the electrical system as it sounds like a short or blown fuse. I have checked the fuses, but since the switch works outside of the gearbox I don't know if this can be correct. Thoughts?

Over here it must be an automatic switch and cannot be replaced with a manual switch. Apparently we can't be relied on to switch it on and off at the relevant times. :(

Thanks Brian, I couldn't find one in the normal place so I assumed it wouldn't have.
