Buying new tires R15, R16, R17? As alluded to with the "Detroit" comment, particularly low-profile tires like 35 series can easily be damaged by holes in the road. Replacing your own tires is unlikely to be something you can do on your own unless you own specialized mounting and balancing equipment and a high volume air compressor. Though I have heard of people who have done it themselves, my local shop charges $20 or $40 to do it and I can't imagine it being worth it to do at home, particularly without the equipment. |

Suzuki Jimny 2009 shaking? A severe warping can cause the caliper to move back and forth as it tracks the warped disc, resulting in shaking of the wheel without the brakes being applied. |

Engine revs high 5th gear manual transmission Patrick is, in general, right about the clutch being annoying to do. I've only replaced a clutch twice, and both times was on a car that I was replacing the engine on and had pulled the engine. The clutch replacement is easy, but re-mating to the transmission can be a real pain, even with the centering tool. |

Engine revs high 5th gear manual transmission @Patrick, did that grind when it was happening? With the clutch slipping, there's really no unusual noise. |

1989 Mazda 626 - Shifter is loose, what's wrong? This sounds like the '94 300ZX I bought back in 2005... I had the dealer replace the shifter bushings, and after that it felt like a new car. I don't recall exactly how much the bushings were, because I had a bunch of other things done at the same time. |

Can I decrease the sensitivity of my seat belt “person detector”? @MaQleod, I think @William means that in the event you have a bag in the seat, and get in a crash, the airbag will deploy and need to be replaced, when there wasn't a person there to save. |

Are used tires valuable? I once sold used tires on ebay. I had bought a car that had all season tires, with reasonable amount of tread left, and I wanted to put performance tires on it. I sold the old ones on ebay. I didn't make much money off it though, but I did get the tires to someone else who could use them. |

Should I get a reusable/washable air filter for my Kia Soul? One caveat against the K&Ns: you either have to maintain the car yourself, or watch others like a hawk. I've had a couple of mine "go missing" over the years, despite having that "STOP, don't throw this filter away" sticker on the air filter housing... |

How to solve unexpected skidding in 1995 Toyota Camry The "normal slow down" while turning could well have been too fast in the rain. If there was a lot of water on the road at that time, it may very well have been that the tread is too shallow and you need new tires. Check them with a coin: tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=51 It could also be your brake system sending too much braking to the front, but that seems unlikely. If you have "summer" or "high performance" tires, they will be more likely to hydroplane in the rain, but better on the dry. Regular practice in vehicle handling in emergencies is useful. |
