Does Downshifting (Engine Braking) Cause Extra Wear and Tear? I am somewhat familiar with what it takes. I am no seasoned racer, but I have spent more than a few hours on the track and spent a fair amount of time practicing the heel blip while downshifting and trail braking into turns. Quantifying the actual wear involved would be an interesting exercise. |

Does Downshifting (Engine Braking) Cause Extra Wear and Tear? @Rory: Maybe in a perfect simulation that could be true. It seems naive to think you can operate a clutch in "binary," without any wear, in the real world. |

Concealing a radar detector Another down vote for this guy? What, do you folks fancy yourself to be the police? |

Concealing a radar detector +1 to help offset the downvotes. Legality is irrelevant. |

What factors should I consider when selecting a suspension kit? @Flimsy: "I don't really even know what "performance" means in the context of suspension" ya, it's complicated. ;-) |

Is the vent from the pcv valve back into the air intake really needed? I think the admonishments on legality are a tad severe, but your answer is quite accurate. |

Is it worth switching to full synthetic or blend oil in my older car/truck? differences in seal and gasket swelling can also be a cause of leaks, perhaps moreso than the removal of old gunk exposing leaks. |

Rough ride on LL Bean Subaru, are the struts the cause? I don't think your assertion is true. Dampers fail in two main ways: oil leakage or physical damage. Oil leakage causes a reduction in damping forces, physical damage usually causes a restriction in movement. Either of these failures effects a single variable in the suspension equation. It's not magic or rocket science - nor is there such a thing as "shock absorbers of yore". There are active systems, but those are not under consideration in this question, nor are they fundamentally different in any way. |

Engine revs high 5th gear manual transmission @Patrick: Higher gears are more susceptible to clutch slipping because there is more resistance to acceleration. When a clutch slips, you have passed the maximum amount of torque that can be transferred through it. In lower gears, less torque needs to be applied through the clutch to make the car accelerate. |

Rough ride on LL Bean Subaru, are the struts the cause? The L.L. Bean edition uses the exact same suspension as the non-L.L. Bean models. |
