Just another nobody out in the world, banging out some code from time to time...

comment How can I tell which body shop is better? Replacing or repairing parts with VIN numbers
Yes, the bumpers are VIN stamped from the factory. It's one of the standard locations. That said, nobody's going to check. You have the tear the front end of the car apart to see that particular VIN. :-)

comment Oil change with front wheels on ramps?
To take Nicks comment a step further... My drains are on the back of the oil pan (on both cars), so it's the lowest point while jacked up in the front. Books says a wet fill should be 4.5qt. I only put in 4qt and they still both show 0.2-0.3 overfilled when I'm done... You're not going to get all the oil out no matter what you do! :-)

comment Hour meter stopped turning
Typically the hour meter inside of a tach is driven off the same input as the tach itself. If there's any signal to drive the tach, the hour meter is driven (usually as % of RPM, so 1 hour at 100% = 1 hour indicated and 1 hour at 50% only shows 0.5 "hour"). There are hour meters driven by oil pressure, but that's typically a stand-alone unit (and measure hours like a normal "clock" hour).

comment Where'd my heat go?
Probably not. My replacement costs were $12 for the thermostat, $26 worth of coolant, and $85 (an hour labor) to have a local shop do it so I wouldn't be stuck cleaning up the big mess that happens when the upper radiator hose is removed. :-D

comment Where'd my heat go?
@Rory That's the opposite of what mine would do. While I was moving the coolant temperature, and therefore heat output, would drop (due to all the airflow that was cooling my overactive thermostat), but when parked I'd get heat since the radiator couldn't mistakenly dissipate too much heat... :-)

comment Why is there oil pooled around the spark plugs on a 2.0L Zetec in a 1998 Ford Contour LX?
Be careful retightening... Some valve covers are quite low torque. I was used to higher torque valve covers but ran across a low torque one once and accidently tried to torque it to 11 ft-lbs instead of the indicated 11 in-lbs!.

comment Does a car lose its pickup with age?
Catalytic converters only get plugged if something else fails. I've got one car with 255,000 miles on the original converter. The other car has 120,000 and is on its third converter. First one died due to fuel pressure regulator failure excessively richening the mixture. Second failed due to ignition power transistor failure, which let raw gas go through the exhaust while I was trying to restart it while coasting to stop. Oh, still made good power, put 267whp down with the clogged converter, with chunks of catalyst shooting out the exhaust (that's how we found it was clogged).

comment Is this gouge in the side of the tire a safety issue?
Yep, that's one to be replaced sooner rather than later. There may not be much rubber left under there, the sidewalls of tires are quite thin compared to the traction surface.

comment Why rear disk brakes do not wear the pads even?
If the bearings and calipers are all in good shape, you shouldn't see any brake wear from improper alignment. It should all show up in the tire. However, with worn bearings you may see some brake wear issues.
