revised Is it possible to paint my Mk1 Golf Engine in either Matte Black or Grey? If so, how?
It sounded like the engine paint was going to suddenly do burnouts and scream down the road.

comment What is the small plastic dimple found on some front doors?
Exactly. It is also the thing that gets pried out of position when a bad person wants to steal things from your car. I was never able to get ours precisely back in shape on our old Honda.

See Zaid's answer here (and cited above): he suggests MAF, fuel pump / filter and O2 sensors as possible culprits.

This sounds like the car is going into a "limp home" mode. Could you post the exact error messages that you are getting? I assume those are coming from some sort of OBD-II scanner or equivalent. FYI: my car can go into a limp home mode if the fuel filler cap isn't on tightly enough - that might be an easy thing to check.

Lorraine, it's great that your issue is fixed. In the interest of future visitors, it would be great if you could share a few more words about why / how you found out that the lambda sensor was bad and how you know if fixed the problem. At that point, you could accept your own answer and the next person to come in with the same problem would see this as a likely option.

comment What is the general rule, if one exists, for determining the difference between crank horsepower and wheel horsepower?
Don't forget that power and torque (in a car) are directly related.

I think this is really a duplicate - going to point it that direction.

comment What is the general rule, if one exists, for determining the difference between crank horsepower and wheel horsepower?
@Ellesedil, there is a difference. AWD loses more to drivetrain losses (which is what Paul is describing). You can think of it as if every mechanical bit between the engine and the wheels is adding to the frictional effect. So, for example, my AWD WRX is losing a greater percentage to drivetrain losses than a RWD BRZ. However, my WRX still ends up with a higher wheel horsepower number (plus the AWD is wonderful in the snow :-).

comment 2004 Hyundai Elantra stalling when tank is full
Here's a thing to try: if you can get the issue to occur in a place where it's safe to park and idle for a bit, hop out and open the filler flap (not the gas cap itself). There should be something like a white button near the gas cap. If you push that, you'll release some of the vacuum in the tank (if that's a problem). If that's part of the issue, you should notice an immediate change in the idle.
