comment Got a call from the mechanic saying I need new disc brakes. Can I buy them online instead?
For some parts, the difference in price is a matter of quality and expectation of failure. You can get cheap parts with a "lifetime warranty" online or at brick and mortar shops for much less than a mechanic's price partly because the manufacturer thinks you're less likely to actually use the warranty if you have to do the labor again yourself (more likely to just scrap the car?), and conversely, mechanics want higher-quality parts because they're putting a warranty on the work and don't want to have to re-do it because the part was bad. For this reason, ...

comment can i split off another circuit from fuse box to run power to cigarette lighter?
@crasic: The starter motor or just the starter solenoid? I'm a bit skeptical that you could power the starter multiple times with accessory lines without melting the wire, not to mention that you would have had to bypass the fuse to do it, since the starter takes a lot more than 10-15 amps.

comment Is it OK to drive Accord with 5% oil life left as indicated?
Does 15% mean the volume of oil is down to 15%, or that the vehicle's computer has determined, based on miles driven and time passed, that only 15% of the oil's expected service life remains? If it's the former, I would think the engine would have already destroyed itself, so I'm guessing it's the latter, and the solution is not to add oil (which may actually be dangerous if it's already full) but to change the oil.

comment Should lost CV gaiter grease be replaced?
OK, that's a reasonable viewpoint, but is it documented anywhere that only professional-equivalent answers are proper on this site?

comment Should lost CV gaiter grease be replaced?
+1 for great example pics, but I'm skeptical of the claim that the difference is only 15 minutes. If any dirt or debris has gotten in the CV joint, which is hard to avoid when taking off the axle and old boot, you're going to need to thoroughly clean it. And if you're not careful, parts are going to fall out, and making sure you get it put back together right is non-trivial if you're not experienced with CV joints.

comment Is it ok to give gas while releasing the clutch?
OK, that's true. I made a point of paying attention to my clutch usage today, since otherwise I have a hard time thinking about what I actually do. For the most part, I hit the gas right at the moment my left foot is coming off the clutch, and indeed acceleration is very smooth.

comment Is it ok to give gas while releasing the clutch?
If you don't, I wouldn't want to ride in the vehicle with you. Shifting without giving any gas as you release the clutch tends to jerk your passengers and/or cargo around quite a bit.

comment Air trapped inside radiator after adding coolant
Are you sure it couldn't cause surging? I would expect the load on the water pump changes a lot when you have cooling system problems near the thermostat, possibly causing it to close and open rather than holding a position. You might also be flopping back and forth between moving water and moving air..

comment Noisy blower fan in 92 Civic
As far as I can tell (both inspection and info on the net) this vehicle does not have any cabin air filter. So it's very possible there's lots of junk in it...

comment Replacing the head gasket in a 1993 Mercedes 300ce
I agree it's possible for a novice, but depending on the type of engine, it can be a huge pain to get the parts off you need to get access. If you do it, you'll definitely feel like you have a much better understanding of car repair afterwards! Make sure you have the right torque specs and tightening procedure, get new bolts if needed for your model, and check the head for warping (using straightedge and feeler gauges) if you want to do it right.

comment Is that easy to start a car like in the movie Parker?
If the attacker had the replacement ECU in advance, plugging it in should only take a matter of seconds, and on newer vehicles with fully electronic keys, it could automatically start the car as soon as it's plugged in without even needing a key... On such vehicles the steering wheel lock is electronically controlled too, so it could be disabled at the same time.

comment How to prioritize repairs?
When I used to get used tires, they were $10 a piece and included free rims. Now I'm stuck getting new tires, but on the bright side, they're $50 a piece, new, installed.

I would think the easiest way would be to have a patched firmware for the vehicle, and/or a complete ECU drop-in replacement to hook up.
