comment Does Registering a Salvaged Car in California Require a “Brake and Light Certificate”?
To clarify, the arrangement you probably want in a situation like this is to sign an agreement with the insurance company that you agree the damages are just under the threshold that would constitute a total loss. Alternatively you can challenge their valuation of the vehicle and take them to court for the damages; if the vehicle value is low enough that you can use small claims court, you may essentially automatically win.

In the future, don't sign your car over the the insurance company to begin with. Just make them pay out a claim for the value of the vehicle minus whatever deduction they claim they'd sell it for.

comment Tools needed for smooth Subaru head gasket job
I've done it before on my Civic, but its head is actually on the top and easy to get to. :-) The only hard part of that job was rusted bolts holding the exhaust manifold in place and keeping me from getting it of the head.

Yes, the full system of coolant comes out the exhaust pipe within 30 minutes of driving. :-) When the leak was less serious I used a sealer product and it held for about 6 months, then progressively got worse to this stage.

comment My brake fluid all left on short notice. What gives?
If the fluid level got really low, you probably have air in the lines now. That would explain the softness and need to pump.

comment Why are drive by wire systems so unresponsive?
@Paulster2: An encyclopedia is never a valid reference, wikipedia or otherwise. However a proper encyclopedia cites references for all the non-obvious facts it includes, so you simply go to those sources for your citation.

comment Why are drive by wire systems so unresponsive?
@MDMoore313: No way, print encyclopedias were even more error-filled, biased (with different biases), etc. Wikipedia is a big step forward, but like all forms of democracy it requires vigilance to make it work.

comment Why are drive by wire systems so unresponsive?
@MDMoore313: That wikipedia article reads like a manufacturer's advertisement for the "feature"; someone should really fix it. Especially the claim of increasing safety is preposterous.

comment Getting the best results sealing head gasket leak with Blue Devil
For what it's worth, I need to revisit and update this answer. After 6 months it started failing, and by now it's undrivable. I've read up a lot more on the chemistry of HG sealing products and I'm left pretty skeptical that there's any benefit to the more expensive ones. I also don't think my guess at how it worked before fully makes sense, so I'd like to make a new shot at trying to explain it.

comment Extremely high then fluctuating idle at very cold temperatures
I've seen this symptom in various vehicles, but not temperature-dependent, where it was the IAC valve. I seafoamed my IAC valve in the past 6 months mainly as preventative maintenance, and it doesn't have this issue under normal temperatures, so I doubt this is the issue.

Very interesting. I hadn't even thought of this possibility. If you or anyone else can find a reference to substantiate this I'll consider the matter closed and accept this answer.

Cleaning the idle air control valve might solve it. A decent cleaning can be performed with seafoam (spray version) without removing it, spraying into it from the throttle body next to the throttle plate.
