comment Do pistons keep moving when the car stops?
You can of course do it manually with the key in older cars, but whether it's worthwhile depends on how efficiently the starter can restart the engine. I suspect newer cars with this feature have the necessary sensors and variable-output starter needed to turn the engine with the minimal necessary electrical power so that you don't lose all your savings from the alternator recharging the battery.

comment Should Multiple Coolant Hose Leaks in a Short Time Worry Me?
If the system returns to normal pressure after cooling down, this is unlikely to be the problem. A HG leak doesn't always mean you'll see oil transfer, though.

comment Shutting off fans at highway speeds
Interesting. If that's the case then you actually want the fans to be "always-on" at speeds above ~35mph so that you can harvest the generated power (to take load off the alternator) rather than wasted, right?

comment What are the Advantages & Disadvantages of a Boxer engine?
If you want to see the disadvantages just try changing a head gasket (or rather 2 head gaskets). Or even just changing the spark plugs... ;-)

comment What are the Advantages & Disadvantages of a Boxer engine?
@IhavenoideawhatI'mdoing: it's a key part of their AWD design, and the low center of gravity is probably nice for the handling/feel of the vehicle.

+1 this is a great tip in general even if it doesn't apply to OP's specific model.

comment Tools needed for smooth Subaru head gasket job
@seth: As for the torque wrench requirements, I'd check the head bolt tightening instructions to be sure about what you need. It's been a while and I don't remember the details right off. I lacked the right torque wrench for the crank pulley nut, so I just took at as far as my torque wrench could then gave it a heavy yank with an ordinary wrench and my "breaker bar" that's just a long (about 4 feet?) pipe that fits around the wrench handle.

comment Tools needed for smooth Subaru head gasket job
@seth: I didn't have the flat ratcheting wrenches for the job, but I think the size that would have helped the most was around 10mm, for the valve covers. My basic toolkit was a full set of regular and deep metric sockets up to 17mm, open-end and 12-point plain wrenches in the same sizes, screwdrivers.

comment 2 Volts on Car Battery
@Nick: Most batteries I've purchased have pro-rated warranties even after the full warranty expires. You might be able to get a replacement for only 30% or so of the cost if it's just a few months out of warranty.
