comment Why do valve lifters get stuck? How come they unstick by themselves?
Potentially - the oil has to seep back around the lifters, through a narrow tolerance, so that'll take time...

comment My mechanic asks me to press the clutch padal while starting engine during winter
@Paulster2, yeah, it must be - all automatics here have such a thing, so you can only start them in Park. I've not driven anything with stop-start so I don't know if they have something, but a brand-new hire car I had recently didn't...

@Mauro, I always park in gear anyway, then move the stick to neutral before starting as force of habit...

comment My mechanic asks me to press the clutch padal while starting engine during winter
@Paulster2: Yep, every car I've owned (all UK spec manual) - none have had any kind of inhibitor - The only one I've driven that did have one was a friend's SAAB...

comment My mechanic asks me to press the clutch padal while starting engine during winter
I know some cars have that, but I didn't think it was a common thing - the only ones I have come across are SAABs and a few Volvos... edit - and don't you mean "start the car while it's in gear"?

@Paulster2 1.6mm is the UK legal minimum - and as the OP mentions the Highway Code, I'd guess he is here.

This would be more useful as an answer if you include more information about the company (for example, their website), and declare whether you have any connection or affiliation to them...

@AndyzSmith I don't know about Automatics (or motorbikes for that matter), I've only ever looked at manual boxes...

comment Synchromesh, Helical gear design
@AndyzSmith correct. I suspect that the other reason for gears actually unmeshing is that it would require either moving the shafts away from each other - which would be complicated, or sliding the gears themselves along the shafts, and crashing them into one another - ok-ish when stationary, but at several thousand RPM, that would soon destroy them!
