comment What would be a very efficient on-board camera?
Hi Skippy - updated my answer based on your question. Much more useful now, as we can see what you are trying to do.

comment How do I know what quality tires to choose? What criteria sets them apart?
No, you misunderstand, @theug, I am not suggesting that. Grip is often compromised for wear, but they are both factors you need to weigh up. How important are the factors to you.

comment Is there a good crash course website or book for auto repair for beginner who's just getting into auto repair?
well, at risk of sounding facetious, this site can be very useful. As you come up against a problem, or an area you need information on, ask the question.

comment Repairing a motorcycle tire puncture. With heat or without heat?
mac - totally agree. A temporary fix to crawl back to the garage. Where you would buy a new tire :-)

comment Why should the fuel petcock valve be turned to “Off” position when not using the vehicle?
a slight addition to this: on many bikes, leaving the selector in the reserve position may cause fuel to drip out onto the floor continually until the tank is empty.

comment If I can feel the difference between two-wheel and four-wheel drive, am I imagining it?
You should not feel any difference, other than a bit of extra noise (as the transmission is drivign all 4 wheels) and slightly less slip on a slidy surface.

comment Does idle RPM increase when there is heavy load on the electrical system?
It's a bit of both really:-)

They will drop a bit, until the voltage drops below whatever threshold is set. Mine does this too, until the revs get down to about 800, then you can hear the surge as the throttle is opened slightly

comment What does “washed out” mean, in terms of headlights?
Or go for a higher wattage ballast if that is the recommended size.

Hmm - not sure what scientific references will work. Garage references may be possible :-)

Not sure what proof you want, dude - that's just the way it is :-)

comment Switching gears without clutch
Yeah, even racing I still use the clutch, but heel and toe-ing speeds up the down changes:-)

Hence the toe part of heel and toe, Nick

hahaha - very true. But the cheering from the kids in their Recaro baby seats always made up for the eye rolling :-)

comment Left signal light indicator stuck on
Lynn's comment re load is still valid - something else has failed so the load has been reduced.

comment What is the purpose of plastic engine covers?
+1 for aesthetics and keeping fluids from getting everywhere. Not sure routing spark plug wires is a main function - not many do that like the VR6 cover, most hide them under the cover :-)

comment Is it OK to replace only 2 tires on an AWD car?
Anecdotally, another issue - a couple of years back I just got new fronts, and my Subaru got incredibly tail happy. Part of it would be down to the reduced grip at the back end, but part would be because of the extra torque being transmitted to the smaller radius rears. I replaced the rears a week later after ending up pointing the wrong way on a roundabout by accident!

comment How old is too old for a new tire?
This must be dependent on country - I know tires are very different in UK and USA, but I have never seen age guidelines in the UK. To be honest, I have never kept a set of tires longer than a year so this hasn't cropped up for me before. Mine last approximately 10000 miles before I would want to replace them anyway - for grip reasons.
