I am a Operations Research and software engineer. I did my MSc in Nantes, France, my internship in Vienna, Austria, and come from London, UK.

I am freelancing in Vienna. Feel free to contact me! I do anything interesting that's solvable in software, but also websites.

The water pump is 2 years old.

I don't think this is entirely right. Althoughi agree that the points 1 and 2 correspond to turbo usage, there is simply no evidence of any overheating. Also, this being VW, the reservoir cap is rated higher than needed as they also use it on bigger (or hotter) engines. So there would need to be a lot of heat to push up the cap, and my thermo says otherwise.

@JuannStrauss: What do you mean by nipples? The coolant reservoir is new, as is it's cap.

Sorry, was in a meeting. I am talking about the coolant reservoir cap, not the radiator cap!

Well i considered both those possibilities but although there is a coolant/oil heat exchanger, the engine temp indicator (known to be working) is not showing any rise. I have to idle the car for 15 minutes to get the temperature above 90 and the radiator fan to turn on. And if it was a cylinder head gasket leak, that would have to get worse over time IMHO.

comment Electrical issues: where are the grounds on a 1997 vw golf mk3 tdi
Found it! The earth tab on the rear left light cluster connecter had burned almost through. I remade it by soldering a new wire to the earth connection inside and connecting it to the rest of the earth wire.

That was my first thought also, so I checked and remade both grounds on the rear light clusters. This didn't solve the problem though.

Thermostat was in perfect condition, so I put it back.

Ok we found the problem. There was a piece of instant gasket (from the water pump replacement last year) in the circuit. This was leading to pressure coming back up into the reservoir and pushing water out of the pressure release valve, which is why I was losing water. Also the radiator may have been a bit blocked but we flushed it backwards and that seems to have got rid of the problem.

I am taking it out at the moment. We shall see!

No smoke from the tailpipe, and the heater works sometimes. The radiator hoses are not under undue pressure.

I always use a block of wood beside the jack in case it fails.

I use one of these. A cheap one. Beware, they are rather susceptible to interference. I'd make sure you get one with enough power to drown out external radio sources on the frequncy you are using.

It really depends on the dent, so don't get too hopeful, but at least it's cheap!

+1 for the WD-40 idea!
