Interesting. I'll try that test. Would you expect the engine to be running poorly otherwise, with a stuck float? Other than the turning problem, the engine runs very smoothly, at idle or at speed, seems to have plenty of power, etc.

comment Alternator isn't charging battery properly. Replace or swap regulator only?
I don't know how easy it is to remove the alternator on your car, but if it's easy, you should pull it off and take it to a local alternator shop. They'll usually test it for free and sell you a rebuilt one for a good price if you need it ($55 for me).

Oddly I do not, and I drive this car all the time. The alternator hypothesis makes sense, but it seems like the battery should be dying all the time. But it's also weird that the voltage is 8.5V even with the engine off. There may be multiple things going on here.

comment Battery drains by itself when vehicle is parked (parasitic draw)
In my car the alternator itself was causing the drain (with engine off). I guess it was shorted somehow. nileor's answer below suggests this can happen with the starter as well. I removed the alternator, took it to a local alternator shop where they confirmed it was bad with some kind of bench test, and rebuilt it for me (about $50). After I installed the new alternator, the drain was gone.
