comment Does the advantage of ballast make minimum weight rule pointless?
@Tik I'm not sure I agree that "even in earlier days, you simply could not afford to have your star driver killed." Driver safety was not historically that big a concern to the vehicle engineers or the race track designers. This gradually changed I think it's fair to say that safety has steadily become more important in racing, especially F1.

comment My car won't start. Is it that I ran it without coolant or is it my battery?
When you say you had zero coolant, you mean that there was no coolant visible in the coolant "bottle," or that you opened a coolant drain at the bottom of the system and nothing came out? If merely no coolant visible in the overflow bottle, then you were likely low on coolant, but not out of coolant. Either way, wouldn't prevent you from starting the car unless there had been some serious drama (major overheating) the last time the car ran. This would not have gone unnoticed.

comment Rear suspension much more sensitive to bumps than front
@vlsd depending on the bushing geometry, you may be able to put some load on the joint with a prybar or something and observe the way the bushing reacts. You may be able to tell which are most worn in this way.

comment Washing coolant system with dish soap to remove oil residue
Perhaps some context would be helpful here. Are you recovering from a blown head gasket or something similar where you know you had some quantity of oil in your cooling system, or are you considering this as routine/preventative maintenance?

what type of vehicle? most likely this is not something "wrong" with the vehicle, merely a consequence of suspension design, weight distribution, and physics.

removed somewhat misleading "non-operable" language. car is operable, just not operated.

comment Hyper-miling and stress on engine oil
@BlessedGeek you seem to be insistent on not following general recommendations, so the only way to make an educated choice about when to change your oil would be to send a sample of your used oil out for analysis. Probably multiple samples at 5k mi, 6k mi, etc. Its the only way to know how far you can stretch your oil changes with your car and your choice of oil and your driving style. Also, you could spend a couple of years over at BobIsTheOilGuy. Or you could just change your oil.

How do they define "necessary"? As I said, if you really care about getting it right, send the oil out for professional analysis. If you want to be safe, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

comment Differences and Recommendation between Steel and Alloy Wheels for Winter?
If the paint on an alloy chips, you can get oxidation of the underlying alloy metal. It won't be red like rust, more typically it will be chalky white. If you catch it before it gets horrendously bad, its simple to clean it up and throw some touch-up paint on to keep the oxidation from spreading.

just a thought--might the switch be damaged/worn such that, even though it works electrically, it is not being depressed far enough by the trans to complete the circuit?
