comment what can be the reason my old diesel Mercedes won't start?
I am the original poster, and now I know its nothing to do with glow plugs or glow plug relay. If the fuel tank is full, it starts instantly even after sitting many days in the cold. And if I leave little fuel in the tank, it takes 2 minutes cranking to start even when kept in a heated garage. The observation of starting on "warm days only" was because on warm days the old battery had enough juice to keep the starter running long enough, now I have a new battery and can start it even in cold winter, with little fuel in the tank if I keep the starter running for 2 minutes.

This is what I believe now is the most likely cause, given these observations: the motor starts instantly even after not running for many days if the fuel tank is full. If I leave the tank with less fuel, then after a day or two the first time I start I have to run the starter for 1-2 minutes.

I mean does it makes sense to heat up the fuel pump and/or injectors with some portable hot thing to be able to start the vehicle that way until I run out of fuel. That way I don't waste 3/4 tank of fuel which is worth half of the price of the starter.

thaks for all info, I will try that. I also read elsewhere that heating up the fuel pump and/or injectors with a hot-air blower can help, and it makes sense as the vehicle starts without problem till the engine is still warm. Does it make sense? Then I could use that method to start it until I use up all the old fuel (unfortunately I have 3/4 of the tank full), and then change the fuel filters, as if I change them before I get rid of the old fuel, they'll just become clogged again, no? P.S. I already just (needlessly) changed the starter for 100 EUR so now I have two good ones.

comment Can an engine stop from a bad battery?
You have to tell more about the car, what type of engine (diesel / petrol), even more precise information about the type of engine would be useful. For example in a old 1980's Mercedes-Benz diesel battery is not required to run, even my 1992 naturally aspirated diesel does not require electricity - battery is only used for starting. In more modern engines I am not sure, but it might need electricity to run.

comment my van is not able to drive over a kerb
@Zencyl: The tires are 215/82 R14 C. It drives down the road fine (also up the road). Kerb is just a normal kerb - the boundary of a sidewalk. Manual transmission. Of course I try with the first gear. What happens? The same thing that happens if I would try to push the 3000 kg van with cargo myself.

comment engine underpowered in idle - what can be done to improve a diesel engine power at low RPM just a bit?
Why would glowplugs matter, they are only used while starting the engine, later they don't do anything, do they?

comment unusual noise when switching into the second gear - other gears are fine
This noise switching into second gear is there since ever I bought the van last year. I can't really tell is it related to at which RPM is the switch, as the van doesn't have a tachometer (I'm planning to retrofit one).

comment how can I measure the amount of fuel injected into a diesel engine in real time in a purely mechanic pre-OBD vehicle?
@Andre Holzner: aren't carburetors only used on petrol engines? don't all diesel engines use injection valves? I have found out that the engine uses a DNOSD261 nozzle. Maybe if you Google that model number you can tell for sure is that an injection valve.

@Bob: it was tested by some guys on a forum with a faulty alternator. The fuel pump is mechanical, driven off through some gearing from the engine - that's sure, confirmed from multiple sources.

@Annath: this engine doesn't need electricity while running, it was reported to run fine with the battery cut-off after starting it, so obviously the injectors can not be fired electrically. Are you sure the injectors can have only open or closed stated, and are not opened partially in which case measuring time would not be enough, as different amounts of fuel can flow in the same chunk of time?

@Andre Holzner: For sure it does NOT have an engine control unit which controls these valves electronically - once started this engine will even run the same without any electricity at all! I have no idea if it has injection valves or a carburettor. What I found out is that: "One of the notable features of the OM-601 is the fuel injection, which utilized a pre-chamber design that stayed in production until it was finally replaced by CDI rail-injection. The fuel injection pump was a Bosch PES-4M."

comment does a car normally continue moving at a constant speed when in gear and the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal?
When the transmission is disengaged (gear stick in neutral), it idles smoothly. I check the tire pressure every time I am bored near a filling station, so I keep it within spec. I'll try the hill thing when I'll be driving over one. What I wanted to know is maybe something can be regulated to have the engine deliver a little bit more torque when idling, maybe cleaning/changing air filters will help, or something else needs to be done to increase the torque while idle? But maybe I add another question about that.

That is not applicable here, as both the passenger car and the van where manual transmissions. Its in Europe. I didn't ever even sit in the driver's seat of a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Yet in the passenger car with manual transmission it was possible (when releasing the accelerator pedal slowly) to have it keep moving with the foot completely off the accelerator pedal and off the clutch.

comment Passat - Oil warning light on engine rev. Expensive fix?
think about it: if it would have been a cheap and easy fix, the seller would have just fixed it and sold the car for a normal price. Unless you know of some legitimate reasons that this seller decided to sell as is, instead of fixing it (I can't think of any right now), its probably not so cheap and easy.

@Patrick you created the synonym, but now "mercedes-benz" is gone from the list of valid tags, so can you add it back?

@Troggy why did you change the "mercedes-benz" tag to "mercedes" which is a synonym, but now this question is not visible under tag mercedes-benz Can you change the tag back to mercedes-benz?

@Patrick if you are at it, mercedes tag as a synonym for mercedes-benz might be useful - in case someone searches for tag mercedes alone, or just to prevent it being added as a standalone tag.
