comment Using narrower tyres than were fitted as standard, for reduced rolling resistance = > fuel economy
Also note that English gallon is larger than US gallon, that’s why British MPG figures are different from American.

@user3098378, I think, regardless of gear, there still should be sensor data on throttle opening, fuel amount, fuel-to-air mixture etc.

comment Small two-stroke engine runs poor
@Larry, there was a little bit of old fuel in the tank, but I filled with fresh mix, hoping it would dilute it. I am not sure how old the fuel is. All yard equipment I had used last year had no problem starting with old petrol this spring.

comment Jetta 2005 won't go past 20 mph
Does it throw any error codes? Check if anything triggered so called “limp-home” mode — in case ECU computer does not receive proper sensor data for air-fuel mixture, it switches to a sort of safe mode that is just enough to putt along. It should also run real rough. I had same issue when my MAF sensor went kaput.

comment Change in exhaust note after extreme backfires--what did I break?
If you flooded it then yes, you'd have excess accumulation of fuel in the exhaust pipes (and not enough pressure to expel it by running it without fuel), so when it would actually catch spark, you would have fuel combust inside the exhaust system, both headers and the muffler. I had seen it with loud pipes, actual flame exiting at the business end. So it is quite plausible that the muffler could have been damaged (especially, considering you had three big cylinders pumping fuel into it), but I don’t have enough experience to declare that with certainty.
