Keeping an old car alive? I've already got that rust as of the past year! It worries me but I don't know what to do about it. |

Can anyone identify the problem? For the record, having identified and fixed the problem: I was low on transmission fluid, but not out. Apparently I just couldn't see well enough in the half-light under which it was examined. The true problem turned out to be simply that my coil had died altogether and needed to be replaced entirely. I still don't fully understand why that allowed for the car to start at all. Thanks for your answer though! |

Keeping an old car alive? I feel like I'm consulting the medical team on options for my dying grandfather. |

I bought a new radio. How difficult would it be for an amateur to install? I think I got such an adapter, yes. Well, what I got is the item on the left in this picture: autotoys.com/pics/ROEM-GM21.jpg |

Can anyone identify the problem? Thing is, I'm not certain it is the transmission. I'm far from knowledgeable about these things. The mechanics this morning said it sounded more like engine trouble to him, like it was misfiring, but he's going to look at both and get back to me soon. Update pending. |

What to do if your car breaks down a LONG way from home? I have AAA. It's $3/mile to be towed. 200+ miles from home...bad. I mean, sure, you can get towed to a local auto shop, but what if the repair is $1000 and you're a poor college student and you don't have that? Is there any safety net that exists for such situations? |

What to do if your car breaks down a LONG way from home? I know this is a bit off-topic, but I thought if there was anywhere to get a good answer, it would be here. |

Where'd my heat go? I don't imagine thermostats are particularly expensive components? |

Enormous discrepancy in part cost estimation; reliability of refurbished parts online? If I took it to a mechanic, would they be able to tell whether it was broken/whether it was repairable just by checking it out? Maybe this is a stupid question, but is there a non-complicated way for them to tell whether it's functioning properly? |

Squeaky steering? Yeah that's what it seems like to me but the second I took it to a mechanic, it stopped making the sound. So typical. |

How do you detect and deal with a freon leak? Definitely not the case for me. So if I go ahead and get the freon put in, I suppose there's no way of knowing how long it'll last before it goes again? Depends on the size of the hypothetical leak, right? Also, say there's no actual leak but the compressor or condenser or some component is flat out not working. would a mechanic be able to tell this by inspection? |

How do you detect and deal with a freon leak? That is very sad :( |

Squeaky steering? As of today it actually happens as soon as I start the car, and then continues for the first couple seconds of driving until I get up to a certain speed. Once I'm slowing down to pull into a spot, it comes back. If I sit still and it's not doing it, but then I touch the wheel to move the tires in place, it comes back. Also, no, I have not checked the power fluid. Is that something you refill, like windshield washer fluid, or something you change, like oil? |

Squeaky steering? (I drive a '97 Subaru Legacy, if it's relevant.) |
