I would start by checking your spark plugs and wires. One way to isolate the problem is to start ruling things out.

I've always tried to avoid hammering a screwdriver into the oil filter. It makes a big mess. I agree with @NickC, get a strap type filter wrench.

+1 for answering your own question. Good link, but I don't know if I would put the headlights in the oven. Just let the sun dry them out and then make sure your seals are good.

Are they aftermarket speakers? Are they hooked up to an amp? You say the crackle is random, but is it always at a higher volume?

@Aerovistae the short answer is yes, a good mechanic has ways of troubleshooting power steering problems. These are a few signs that they would probably look for: http://www.ehow.com/list_7175964_signs-bad-power-steering-pump.html This isn't an all inclusive list, but it gives you an idea.
