comment Automatic transmission: Is shifting to neutral while approaching stops bad?
your first two points are perfectly valid, but why do you say that "really really bad things may happen" if you shift into drive while moving?

comment Strong vibrations when idling even after replacing engine mounts (automatic transmission)
@burn I have not. I have been super busy with a thesis and other broken things on the car. My current three candidates are PCV valve, injectors and intake manifold, in that order.

comment High pitch whistle at a very particular throttle level
Agree on the cold air intake point, but my intake was severely busted and this turned out to be a cheaper/easier replacement.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

comment High pitch whistle at a very particular throttle level
@Paulster2 Yeah I know the carb cleaner is flammable, I was very careful with it around hot parts and had an extinguisher nearby. Also I've been driving with the custom intake for about a year or two before the noise started...

comment oil sludge in my 1998 Honda Civic LX radiator
Oil in the coolant is often indicative of a blown head gasket, but there are many other reasons why it would happen. Oil in the coolant alone doesn't necessarily mean you need to replace/rebuild the engine. What other symptoms do you encounter and what other tests has the mechanic done on the car? (e.g. compression test)

comment Daytime running light failure — one side only
New info is very helpful! I edited my answer a bit. Bad grounding is well known for making things act in all sorts of miraculous ways. Quick question: do you know where the DRL relay is or were you simply speculating that one might exist and it might be bad?

comment Emergency brake light always on
Your emergency brake should be on a different system than the brake pedal. Where is the switch for the light that you managed to turn off, and what engages it?

when you flushed your coolant, did you "burp" the system?

comment How can you tell the difference between oil or transmission fluid in the antifreeze?
@mac they make UV dye that's safe for oil? that's awesome!

What are the colors of the wires coming into the bulb? I expect one to be black, the other to be green-white and then something unknown.

comment What is causing this terrible grinding/groaning noise when I come to a slow stop sometimes? (but not always!)
I'm curious, did the mechanic explain why the problems with the rear brakes result in uneven wear on the front pads?

I believe he said he already flushed the radiator and the oily stuff came back.

Why did the battery die? Did you leave your lights on overnight? If not, your alternator may be failing.

comment Automatic Transmission or Differential Backlash (Play)
ok so I can rule out both mounts and axles (both recently replaced). This really points inside the transmission, correct?

comment Automatic Transmission or Differential Backlash (Play)
I understand that backlash in any mechanism is unavoidable but in this particular situation it seems excessive. There indeed is a slight clunk when shifting into drive and reverse and also the car sometimes re-adjusts after setting it into park and releasing the brakes.

comment Automatic Transmission or Differential Backlash (Play)
@NickC I am pretty sure that the wheels should turn in opposite directions when no drive is applied. Regardless, when in park, how do I figure out if the amount of play is normal or not?

comment High pitch whistle at a very particular throttle level
@EvanParsons No I can't get it to happen when the car is standing still. Also, I could put the original air box in but it is broken and leaky and I doubt it would make for a very good test.

comment VW Golf TDI makes a 'sneezing' sound on startup
Do you think you could record the noise? Sneeze and high-pitched are kind of ambiguous ways to describe engine noises...
