comment What do I risk if I don't fix my leaking evaporator core on my 2004 Jeep GC?
R.., R-12 damages the ozone layer, so calling it "more environmentally friendly" is incorrect. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichlorodifluoromethane

comment Intermittently fluctuating/non-functioning speedometer in Volvo 940. Possible causes?
The 940 has 3-channel ABS in which the rear wheels are treated as a single unit. The speed sensor signal used by the speedometer is the same sensor used by the ABS to measure the speed of the rear wheels. I think that's why your ABS warning light is on.

comment Do I have to get another Volvo?
What Volvo model did you have? Some older Volvos (e.g., the 900 series) had engine cooling fans that would sometimes continue to run for a few minutes, but I'm not aware of any feature to dry out the A/C.

comment Clunking sound at back of car when applying brakes
How many clunks do you hear? You say you hear them when gently applying the brakes, so does the clunking continue as long as you keep the brakes on? If so, does the frequency of the clunks change with the speed of the car?

comment Concealing a radar detector
Well, the modification would be legal in some places, so the question could be of general interest. I think the issue of doing the wiring is on-topic, but the issue of how best to conceal the hardware is off-topic.

comment Is the vent from the pcv valve back into the air intake really needed?
@Wulfhart I would expect the automakers to design the engine to correctly handle the extra air coming from PCV. I don't think you're going to improve on their design. Likewise for keeping oil out of the intake. Remember that small amounts of oil leaks past the piston rings into the combustion chamber anyway. And for what it's worth, my 1992 Volvo's PCV system came from the factory with an oil reclamation mechanism built in.

comment Is the vent from the pcv valve back into the air intake really needed?
@Wulfhart Thanks for the clarification. I think PCV is primarily, if not solely, an environmental measure. There may be some fuel efficiency gained by burning blow-by fuel vapor rather than venting it, but I suspect that is negligible.

comment How do I select the right oil for my car?
@endolith I've heard the notion that synthetic oil can leak past older oil seals, but not that it could damage the engine. I'd say that's a separate but related question.

comment How do I select the right oil for my car?
@Tone What I was trying to get across was that one won't hurt anything by using conventional oil, even though synthetic oil might be better. Sort of like replacing tires; a set of good performance tires offers more grip (ergo, more safety), but there's nothing wrong or harmful about buying inexpensive tires (provided you replace them on time). There's a cost/benefit tradeoff involved that's hard to calculate finely. I was trying to indicate the general contour of the tradeoff. I've edited a bit to make my thoughts clear; I'm open to more suggestions.

comment Should only the left “Rear Fog Light” actually light up in a pair?
As an additional datum to confuse the issue further: My Volvo 940 has rear fog lamps on both sides, but the lamps on the left are brighter.

comment Rough ride on LL Bean Subaru, are the struts the cause?
How long have you had the car? Since new? For how many miles has the ride been poor? When you say "hard" ride, I understand you mean that bumps feel harsher than they should. Is that right, or do you mean the car bounces up and down more than you think it should? Worn struts would make the car bouncier, not harder.

comment Free online databases?
Can you make your question more specific? A question about a specific kind of information for a particular make/model of vehicle would make this question easier to answer, and more useful to those who come upon it later.

comment Timing belt sound - time to replace?
Most modern engines will be badly damaged if the timing belt fails. What did the Toyota dealer recommend? Replacing the belt? Replacing the belt tensioner(s)?
