It certainly used to be possible to damage the mechanism. . Years ago, on my 1979 Renault 5, I managed to break the self cancellation mechanism just as you describe. In fact you are not damaging the wheel. I do have the same habit toggling the indicators while zigzag from left to right and right to left. Nothing had happened to my car indicator switch. If the trickling sound was very high while the indicator was engaged check the flasher relay, probably it need to be replaced.
