I imagine it doesn't matter so much before or after shifting to park, as it does matter whether it's before or after you release the brake pedal. However, the answer may differ between automatic and manual transmissions. – Iszi Mar 8 '11 at 16:14
What matters more is how much strain is on the transmission after releasing the pedal. A lot of people don't even use the parking brake, but if you're OCD. Apply parking brake, shift to neutral, release brake pedal, reapply pedal and shift to park. – Eric Fossum Jan 29 at 0:11
